THEFT OF HAT.
WOMAN TO PAY FINE OF £5. A summons charge of stealing a hat valued at £1 2/G 011 December 18 was brought against Eileen P. Scott, before Mr. W. K. McKean, S.M., in tlic Police Court yesterday. Defendant, for whom Mr. F. W. Schramm appeared, pleaded not guilty. According to evidence given it was alleged that the liat in question was missed from a Queen Street shop and that subsequently defendant was seen wearing it. When interviewed by the police, defendant said she had bought the hat from another woman, Mrs. O. Hughes, who was also known as Mrs. Scott. This woman, in evidence, denied that she took the hat from the shop, as was suggested by the defence. After hearing evidence by the defence the magistrate said he did not believe defendant's story. The onus was upon her to give a satisfactory explanation. A line of £5 was imposed, a week being allowed in which to pay.
