U.S. DEPORTATION CASE. CHICAGO, March 22. The English author Mr. Evelyn John Strachey appeared before the Immigration Board for a formal hearing of deportation charges, the report of which will be forwarded to the Department of Labour in Washington for a final decision.

The questioners read from Mr. Straehey's writings in an attempt to show that he believed in the violent overthrow of Governments, and also quoted from the writings of Marx and Ellgels, at the same time requesting Mr. Strachev to cimnieiit on them.

Mr. Straehey's defence is that while he is a believer in Communism, he is uot a member of the party, and has never urged violence iii any of his American lectures.

A move detailed defence will be allowed at the continuation of the hearing.
