Derby Fame and Ariel Bell in Places. Bonnv Azure and Kewpie's Crest were the only .withdrawals from the- Devonport Handicap, and when backers got busy they elected .Star Pronto, Muriel Bond and Kia Kaha, the favourites. Star Pronto was a little slow to begin order when the field settled down was Tinokaha, Direct Line, Charteris Bay, Ariel Bell, Kia Kaha and Muriel Bond. Gh'arteris Bay dropped back as they raced past the stands, and Tinokaha led along the back from Direct Line, Ariel Bell, Muriel Bond, Derby Fame, Charteris Bay, Kia Kaha and Star Pronto. Tiiiokaha was still clear as they reached the top, being just clear'of Derby Fame, Muriel Bond, Charateris Bay and Star- Pronto. The last-named began to move up at this stage, and the order into the straight was Ariel Bell, Derby Fame, Tinokaha, Star Pronto and Kia Kaha. Once in line for the judge. Star Pronto came through and soon settled the opposition to win easily by two lengths and a half from Derby Fame, who beat 4ricl Bell hv half a length. Tinokaha was fourth/then came Muriel Bond, Charteris /Bay, Kia Kaha, Mountain Flight and Direct Line.
A Surprise. Onlv seven paraded for tlie Franklin Handicap, and when the totalisator figures were adjusted the favourite division comprised Rare Key, Tryment and Bonnie Direct. All went away we 11, and the order early was Minßells, Kaie Rev, Peter Junior, Silver Watch, Tryment, Prince Etawah and Bonnie Direct. There was no alteration past the stands and alone the back, out Silver Watch then moved up smartly and led across the ton attended by Min Bells, Peter Junior, Rare Key and Tryment. Silver Watch turned for home just clear of Min Bells, with Rare Rey and Peter Junior together next. Nothing had a chance with Silver Watch, and he went on to win easily by a couple of lengths from Rare Rey, who beat Min Bells by a neck. Peter Junior -was. half a length away fourth, and then finished Tryment, Bonnie Direct and Prince Etawah.
