PRISONERS' PAY.
Recently I heard a spirited address by Mr. Moreton about discharged prisoners. The Government allows only £50 per year to this society. Would you kindly tell me if these men receive no pay at all whilst in prison, or is there some sort of payment given to them for the work they do, so that the dependents can collect it? JUST A WOMAN. [Until a prisoner has served three months he is "not on marks," meaning that he does not begin to earn money. At the end of four months payment is credited to the prisoner's dependents. The Prison Department allows the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society only £.30 per annum, which is totally inadequate to provide funds for after care.—Ed.]
