CRICKET.

AUCKLAND CONTROL OF GAME APPEALS AGAINST LIGHT. RE-EXGAGEMEXT OF TOWNSEND. 1 Mr. YV. R. Fee presided at last night's meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association, when au acceptance was received from Lγ F. lownsend o£ renewal ot his coaching engagement for another season. The terms ottered were £450, New Zealand currency. Townsend leaves next Sunday tor Rotorua and Wellington, where he joins the Rangitiki on March 15 for England. It was decided to hand Xownsend a letter of appreciation ot" his services, and to write to Lord Havke and the Derbyshire County Cricket Club expressing satisfaction with his work. Mr Fee stated that the match between the Colts and South Auckland, played at Hamilton on February 27, was successful and the standard of cricket showed the value of good coaching. He felt that the Colts should be given at least one match a month next season, but he wished it to be made known that, although there had been mention of such in the coach committee s report at the commencement of the season, there was no intention of entering the team in the first-grade competition. Appreciation was expressed of the cooperation of employers in allowing leave to the players who took part in the Colts matches, and also of the members of themanagement committee who placed their cars at the disposal of the players. It was decided to adopt the suggestion of the Umpires' Association that appeals for light be permitted by the batsmen, as, if it were compulsory to make such appeals through the captains, there would be too much delay at possibly critical moments in a match. . . . The Umpires' Association also advised that if incoming batsmen did not strictly observe the two-minute rule, they would be prepared to allow an appeal for the match. The management committee favoured the issue of a warning to the captains before any such drastic action was taken.
