FORTUNATE ESCAPE.
EXPRESS HITS BAKER'S VAN. MAN THROWN OVER FENCE.
(By Telegraph. — Press Association.) LEVIN, this clay. I A bakery van owned by Messrs. Bevis and Adams, of Levin, and driven by Mr. L. Palmer, was wrecked at the Vance Street level crossing when it was hit by the express from Napier, which was due at Shannon at 11.50 this morning. The train was travelling at a fast speed at the time of the sma=h. When he noticed the train the driver of the van swerved, but was too late. He had a miraculous escape, being thrown over a fence. He was picked up still conscious, and after receiving first aid from the stationmaster and the district nurse he was taken by train to the Palmerston North Hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known. Trains were delayed till the lino had been cleared of the wreckage.
