STREET COLLECTIONS.
SHOPKEEPERS' COMPLAINT. "I think it time for us to do away with street collections and make a donation .where the cause is a worthy one. Of ■ course the returned soldiers would be permitted to hold their street collection on Poppy Day and the St. John Ambulance would also be in the same position, "but other organisations could be given a donation." These remarks were made t>y the Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, at last night's meeting of the Mount Eden Borough when a request for permission to take up a street collection was received from the Plunket Society. Mr. McNab said that such collections were held on Fridays and shopkeepers had complained that the collections interfered with business. Messrs. Battley, Cowan and Cliappell supported the recommendation of the finance committee that a donation, of £2o be made to the society in lieu of the street collection. The recommendation of the' committee was adopted.
