£1000 IN NOTES.

FORGED CHEQUE. CASHED IN NAPIER BANK. POLICE GIVEN HARD TASK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) XAPIER, this day. One thousand pounds in notes comprised the coup of a man, believed to be a stranger to Napier, who presented a forged cheque for that amount at the Xational Bank of Xew Zealand in Xapier on Tuesday, February 19. The cheque is believed to have been cashed on a private account held at the bank, and the fact that it was a forgery was discovered last Saturday, when the police were immediately informed. The cheque has been the subject of extensive inquiries, which are being continued without cessation. A factor which probably makes the task of the police more difficult is that the notes used by all the trading banks in Xew Zealand have beeii the same since the establishment ol the Reserve Bank last August. There is, therefore, no chance of tracing the notes, which were handed over, by the designation ujmi the face ot tLe bank from which they were issued. Further details connected with the affair are not at the present l r.ie. TJiu manager of the bank, Mr. L. Clark, oiated this morniug that the head ofiice at Wellington had been supplied with details o." the forgery, and that investigations u ore 'wing handled by the police. Beyond that he was unable to give details ot the circumstances in which the cheque was cashed, or fo state the serial number of the notes, which were handed o;ir in payment of the cheque. It is understood, however, that the list of these serial numbers is not yet complete, and ihat those engaged on the inquiries are now checking these up with the view of obtaining a comp'ete list. °
