MORTGAGE BILL.
PRESENT FORM ATTACKED. TARANAKI CRITICISM. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWERA, Tuesday. A resolution expressing disappointment and dismay at the form in which the Mortgage Corporation Bill was presented to Parliament was passed at a meeting of West Coast of Taranaki farmers at Hawera to-day. There was an attendance of about 500. Following addresses by Messrs. Ay. J. Poison, M.P., H. Mellsop, of Auckland, H. Blyde, of Lepperton, Lloyd Hammond, of Hunterville, the meeting also expressed its entire opposition to the principle of joint stock control contained in the bill and urged Parliament, even at this late hour, to amend the measure and provide for co-operative, or, in the alternative, State control. The meeting was satisfied tnat no organisation run for profit either can, or will, raise money as cheaply, or lend it to farmers or anyone else at as low a rate, as the State. Mr. Poison attacked the bill on lines closely following his speech in Parliament, intimating that he would light the clauses in the bill through the Committee stages.
