MATAMATA NOTES.
POI DANCE TURNED OUT,
ENGI NOW WITH CATHRO
The latest addition to Matamata track workers is Engi, who was handed over to J. W. Cathro after the Rotorua meeting.
Poi' Dance, who was expected to race at the Te Aroha meeting, has been turned out. There was nothing wrong with this mare, who was somewhat unlucky to be beaten on the first day at Rotorua. Her defection from R. Martin's string is bad luck for the mentor.
Swift Spear, who won at Matamata, is engaged at Te Aroha and is executing serviceable work. While the class is a little 6tronger, Swift Spear won so impressively at the local meeting that his chance of further early success seems assured.
O. Reed has arrived at Matamata to enter Mr. J. Clothier's stable. It is expected that two of his mounts at Te Aroha will be Swift Spear and Bonny Gay (Hack Cup). Gay Lap has been accepted for at Te Aroha. He still looks a little big and sore but the latter can be discounted. It will be recalled that Gay Lap won for R. J. Mateer at Te Aroha two meetings back, when he appeared very sore and had only had six weeks' work. A few gallops makes a decided improvement to this horse, who is naturally gross.
Dark Marble's work is being confined to the flat and he will probably be started in the Hack Cup at Te Aroha. If so, he will have friends, particularly as the yielding track should suit him. He has previously run good races af this meeting. Royal Dance is "nominated for the second dav at Te Aroha. This improver has trained on satisfactorily since being narrowly beaten by Miss Lu in the Railway Hack Handicap at Matamata in the fastest time of the day for six furlongs.
