NIGHTLY'S FUTURE.

THE AUSTRALIAN TRIP. rtTRTHER TEST REQUIRED. REBEL CHIEF IN NICE ORDER. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. A. Messervy will go north this week to ride at the Woodville meeting. His only definite engagement is the two-year-old Blue Garter, but he should have no difficulty in securing other mounts, as he is riding very well at present. Nightly is looking none the worse for his race in the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin. He was given useful work at Riccarton this morning. F. D. Jones, while pleased with the way he won on Saturday, realises that the horse was not severely tried out, and a more searehiug test ia required before the Australian trip will be justified in the autumn. Nightly will be nominated for the Thompson Handicap at Trentham, and if he comes through the mile race all right he may contest the Awapuni Cup, one mile and a quarter, the following week. Rebel Chief is being kept going with strong pace work, and is in nice order to take on more serious tasks as soon as the tracks become easier. He may be raced at Oamaru next month. If that programme is decided on he will probably be accompanied by Gold Coat (Pink Coat — Fairness), a three-year-old who is 'beginning to show promise in his work. The Limond —Curtain filly purchased by Mr. E. Hay at the Trentham yearling sales last month has been broken in by T. H. Gillett. She looks one of the ready made sort, and may prove good for early two-year-old racing. Additions To Team. Mr. H. A. Knight's yearling colt by Philamor from Windshield, dam of Shatter, has arrived at Riccarton. F. D. Jones is not in a hurry to break him in, however, as it is not intended to race him as a two-year-old. F. D. Jones expects to have three vearlings, bred by Mr. H. D. Greenwood, "in his team before long. The Iliad nlly from Goldspear, dam of Hostis, will be the first taken in hand. The three-year-old Control was a source of worry to F. D. Jones when in work last season, his feet causing a lot ot trouble. He has been spelling for a few months, and arrangements have been made to give him some preliminary exercise on the beach at New Brighton before ha. resumes track work at Riccarton. Fair Weather recovered quickly from the slight mishap that prevented him racing at the Dunedin meeting. He is training on well, and will make his next appearance at the Motukarara meeting. His 6table mate Manetho is also working freely, with a similar programme in view. Each of the pair has been nominated for the two open events, but it is unlikely they will clash, though nothing definite lias been decided about races they will contest.
