GENERAL ELECTION.

GISBORNE SEAT CONTEST. POSSIBLY FOUR-CORNERED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. There is a possibility of a three or even a four-cornered contest for the Gisborne seat at the general election. The sitting member, Mr. D. W. Coleman, will again carry the official' Labour nomination, while Mr. W. D. Lysnar, the former member, before leaving for England, definitely intimated that he would stand as an Independent. Now Mr. R. F. Gambrill has advised an influential deputation that if one or two difficulties whicli at present stand in the way can be overcome he will accept nomination as an Independent supporter of the Coalition. Mr. Gambrill is president of the R.S.A. and Rotary Club and chairman of the district transport licensing authority.

The fourth possible aspirant is the Mayor, Mr. John Jackson, who is at present absent from Gisborne, but whose name is mentioned as a likely Democratic candidate. Mr. H. D. de Lautour, who stood at last election as a Reform nominee, will not be a contestant on this occasion.

The former Native Minister, Sir Apirana Ngata, may find an opponent for the Eastern Maori seat in Mr. R. T. Kohere, of East Cape. Mr. Kohere is head of one of the leading families on the East Coast, and a grandson of the Hon. Mokena Kohere, one of the first two Maoris to be called to the Legislative Council. He was educated at Te Ante College and Canterbury University College, and is one of the "founders of the Young Maori party. His politics are described as inclining to Reform, but with sympathies for Labour. ■

In the Bay of Plenty electorate Mr. K. S. Williams, who last time was unopposed, will have to fight a Labour candidate, Mr. Gordon Hultquist. Mr. Williams' health has been causing some concern recently, and the possibility of his not seeking re-election has been suggested.
