NIXON CUP CONTEST. WAITEMATA CHEWS VICTORY. The annual inter-club four-oar race for the. Nixon Cup, held under the auspices of the Tiininkl Yacht Club, -was rowed on Saturday from about the centre of Hobsoii Bay to tho club's boathouse at the Bastion Point. Six crews, two each from Waitemata, St. George's and North Shore, faced thu starter. A fresh breeze from the north raised a rough sea and made conditions totally unsuitable for such a contest. Four ooate swamped, while St. George's No. 2 were compelled to retire owing to a broken rowlock pin, Mr. A. C. Nor<l en sent the. crews away to a good start, and St. George'H No. 1 quickly forged ahead, followed by Waiteimitn No. 1, the light maiden four, Waitematit No. 2, and Shore No. 1, with Shore No. 2, uud St. Qcorge'a No. - close up. The last-named crew were moving along nicely when the rowlock pin broke, and settled their chances, Shorn No. 2 then swamped near Orakoi. St. George's No. 1 in (lie lead were making heavy going of If, and were jiasaed by the Waitemata light maiden. Less than a quarter of a mile from Ihn lino St. George's went under, and Wailemala No. 1! look second place, followed , by Shore. The leaders carried <m unhampered and the light crew raced through the rough water to cross tho line lirst, followed by Waitemata No. 2, who then Kwoniped, and as North Shore No. 1 crossed the line it also swamped. The condition of tho water made a most unsatisfactory rare, but nevertheless the winners rowed In fine style. The Waitenutta crew was K. Stables (stroke), A. Harper (3), C. Cairns (2) F. Weaver (bow).

In choppy water, thu Wailemata Boating Club held trial fours for Mr. T. ljnpey'a trophies during I lie week-end, a short course from the King's wharf to the eastern tide dellector being used. The crews in the lirst heat were:—Simpsou, Shirley, Muckay, J. Molloy ; Groos, f. Cairns, Weaver, 1 , . Cairns. .Simpson won with throe-quarters of a length to spare. In the second heat tlie crews were: —Barker, Cortiett, A. .Smith, C. Molloy ; .Stables, Dalton, Wright, O'Hunlon. The winning crew was stroked by S.tallies, who iinished two lengths ahead of Barker. The Iliiul provided a good race, with the crews of. Staliles and Simpson lighting hard for a lead for the greater part of the race. Willi a quarter of the course to liulsll, Stables drew away lo win by three-quarters" of a length.

AUCKLAND CLUB.

Trial fours for tlie Clarke Shield were rowed by the Auckland Kowlng Club, over n short course from the King's wharf to the eastern tide deflector during the weekend. The crews were :—1... IC. Hughes (stroke), C. Hughes, J. Bills, L. C. Winters; F. Foote (stroke), B. Halls, It. G. Boon, Lambert; • It. Wilson (stroke), H. Jellic, C. Mαrecau, W. Walker. The crews were sent away to an even start, Wilson's crew jumping Into the lead, followed by Hughes and Foote in that order. With halt the course covered, Wilson had a leau of a length on Hughes, with Foole another length further back. Rowing a faster stroke, Wilson slightly Increased his lead to win by a length and α-half, with Foote three lengths behind Hughes.

WEST END CLUB

A course from the oil tanks to the Shelly Beach Hatha was used at St. -Mary's Bay when the West Knd Club held trial fours l'or the Kohu Shield, Jn spite of rather rough water, conditions inside the wall were conducive to good rowing, and tho entry of tour crews put ui> a line exhibition. StartIng was by muliial consent, and the races were judged by club olllcials. The contest was run in two heats, tho crews in tho first heat being: l>. Lamble (stroke), J. Poland, it, Allum, I. Keyaj N. Jerroine (stroke), J. Davey, K. McPherson, K. Howe. J,aiiil)ie got away for ii good start, anil for half the course had a slight learl on Jerrome, which he increab'ed to win by a length. In the second heat the crews were: 30. Cruios (stroke), J. Burton, N. Bellamy, M. McNeil; W. I'arnell, R. Bassotf, I). Hotham, X. Farroll. Crales got a Blight lead at the start, and Parnoll challenged vigorously, but Craies kept his lead to win by a length and a half. A stirring race was witnessed In the final between the crews of I.amhie and Craies. l.iimble was half a length in the lead, but ("rales livened up at tho gap, ami in an exciting finish he got the decision by a length. The winning crew was: R. Craios (stroke), J. Barton, N. Bellamy, M. McNeil.
