DAVIS CUP CONTEST.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF DRAW.

N.Z. TO PLAY AUSTRALIA. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, February 2. The draw for the Davis Cup contest took place to-day in the council chamber of the India Office, in the presence of many foreign diplomats. Sir Samuel Hoare, president of the Lawn Tennis Association, drew the names of the contesting countries from the trophy itself. New Zealand is to meet Australia in the lower half of the draw for the European zone and the winner will meet France. Following are the details of the draw:— EUROPEAN ZONE. Upper Half.—Poland and South Africa, byes; Czecho-Slovakia plays Yugoslavia; Japan plays Holland. Lower .Half—New Zealand plays Australia; France, Germany and Italy, byes. NORTH AMERICAN ZONE. China plays United States; Mexico plays Cuba. SOUTH AMERICAN ZONE. Brazil plays Uruguay. The challenge round will be played on grass. The "Morning Post" says the draw is one of the most extraordinary in the history of the contest. It is hard luck for Australia and New Zealand to be bracketed, and they might as well play the tie before sailing for Europe. Another peculiar clashing is that of Czecho-Slovakia and Yugoslavia.

N. BROOKES OPTIMISTIC. (Received 0.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Norman Brookes, captain of the Australian Davis Cup team, considers the draw for this year's contest very favourable to Australia owing to the fact that the Australians will be able to remain in one country—France—for more than a month. This will put them in their best form to meet Boussus, Merlin and others, and then to face the winners of the tie between Germany and Italy on the same type of courts.
