HOLIDAY ACCIDENTS
LORRY OVER CLIFF.
THREE PEOPLE INJURED. OTHERS RECEIVE SHAKING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, this day. Three people were injured seriously and others slightly in ;i motor lorry accident on Saturday afternoon. Mr. W. .1. Forrest, of Paeroa, was driving a lorry load of people up the Karangahako Mountain to Talisman Dubbo gold mine, where tho road fe narrow and precipitous in most places. .About hall' way up tlxc driver encountered a cow on the road and veered to the side to avoid the animal. The roadside was overgrown with blackberries, and Mr. Forrest took the wheel of the lorry into u clump of bushes, thinking I hey covered part of tho road. The bushes, however, were just overhanging the bank, and the lorry plunged over (he Will'. After rolling 30 feet its pronreM was cheeked by the heavy growth of blackberry biwhcx. Mr. Forrest sustained a broken jaw. His daughter, Miss Ilea Hi Forrest, sustained head injuries, requiring three stitches, and Mr. W. McConachie, manager of the Talisman Dubbo gold mine, had three ribs broken. The other passengers Kitting in the bark of the lorry escaped with bruises and scratches. Mr. .Forrest was conveyed to his home, where he is receiving medical attention, while Mr. McConaeliie is in the Paeroa Hospital. The roadway tip Knrangahake Mountain runs almost to the summit and " 1S iirtcd, extensively by (rucks working on the Talwinan Dubbo, Imperial and other milling claims. The road has been cut in the'side of the mountain overlooking the Waitawhetn Gorge. It was the scene, of very extensive mining operations a quarter fit' a century ago. This morning Mr. Porrcet was reported to be progressing well.
