THE FIFTH ROUND.
PROGRESS OF THE TOURNEY
LITTLE'S FIRST DEFEAT
The rink championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued this morning, when O:>G players contested the fifth round on 10 greens in the city and suburbs. Interest is steadily increasing, and the progress of the leading rinks in each section is being closelv watched. It seems probable that this fixture will become still more prominent as the section play draws to a close to-morrow, so it may be mentioned that section A will be at Waitemata, B at Balmoral, C at Hallyburton Johnstone, D at Carlton, K at Mount Albert, F at Hillsboro', G at Devouport, II at Kemuera, I at Ponsonby, .T at Onehunga, K at Auckland. L at Epsom, M at Bllerslie, N at Grey Lynn, O at Te Pa papa, and P at Mount Eden.
All tlic rinks wlio qualify, as a result of tlie eight rounds to be completed tomorrow, will assemble at the Carlton preen on Wednesday niornimr, to begin post-section play on' the two-life system. It is also hoped to resume post-section play in the pairs and singles as soon as the competitors surviving therein are relieved from the rinks.
Little (Hamilton) met with his first defeat at the hands of McPhail (Auckland) in section P this morning. On the thirteenth head Little was 13—9. and he remained on the "devil's number" for eleven heads, while his opponent put on 14 points. McPhail eventually won, 2:i—2o.
At Waitemata (section J) Harrison, the Australian, who is skipping Parker's Auckland team, suffered his first defeat in the rinks when Jones (Kensington, Whan.iarci) beat him easily by a dozen points.
The rinks champion, Wilson (Linwood) had another win at Carlton, in section P, accounting for Pindlay (.Mount Eden), after a good game, 25—23. On the same green Lamb and Johnson staged a great battle. They were level, !)—!) on the eighth, 10—10 on the tenth, 15—15 on the fourteenth, 17—17 on the sixteenth, and 2.3 —25 on the twenty-second. Lamb eventually won, 29 —25.
Only Eight Unbeaten. At the end of the fifth round there were only eight skips undefeated. They were:— Thomas (Wairerc). Lundon (Devonport). S. Jen kin (Carlton), Lett (Park, Masterton). Robertson (Onehunga). Carswel! (Auckland). Thoo. Walton (Mount-Albert). Buchan (To Aroha). Three skips who suffered their first loss- this morning were Muston (Carlton).- Little (Hamilton), and Dunston (Waihi). First wins were recorded by Dr. Paterson (Mount Albeit). Melville (Devonport), and Coburn (Ponsonby).
