COMMERCE CHAMBERS
GISBORNE BREAKS AWAY. AGAINST CENTRALISATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. A dispute rc-garding affiliation fees and an objection raised to the policy of centralisation has resulted in the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce deciding to withdraw from the Associated Chambers. The annual fees charged for Gisborne have been increased from 3/ to 7/0 per member, and although the Associated
Chambers would agree to accept 0/ per member, payment of £22 10/, being the balance owing, has been insisted upon. When correspondence was read regarding the matter it was immediately moved and seconded that the chamber withdraw its affiliation, the secretary pointing out that to meet the additional levy would entail increasing subscriptions, in which case some members would resign.
Mr. L. T. Burnard, chairman, said that lie believed that unity was strength, but at the same time it bertainly appeared that the association was being too much centralised. Mr. T. Corson criticised tho way the four centres were trying to "run the show," and Mr. F. Tolorton contended that the association was trying to run the organisation on a too expensive scale. Tho motion to withdraw affiliation was carried with only one dissentient.
