CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.
Hie Lordship the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cherrington, of Hamilton, has expressed very graciously his admiration of the sacrifices which Catholics traditionally make for the inculcation of religion in their children and has gone so far as to declare a liability on the part of the State Sor the educational work done by this denomination in relief of the general taxpayer. This is probably to the extent of £500,000 annually. His Lordship predicted that within the next hundred yearn Catholicism would very likely prevail, and that it "was our own fault if it did." Only a humorist would read into this remark a left-handed compliment to the Church he was praising. I have for many years wondered how it has been possible for politicians to completely ignore this liability. There was a time when some monetary recognition was possible, if not at present; but the point is that our politicians, who, as a group would declare themselves bursting with the spirit of British fair play, possess just that modicum that makes their seats safe, and ignore this silent claim. Not only so, but privileges (paid for by Catholics equally with others in taxation) are denied Catholic owned and operated and taught schools which show efficient results. This thought is worth the attention of any fair-minded person. The fact must make all Catholics deeply grateful to his Lordship, Bishop Cherrington. F.M.S.
