SOUTHERN EXCHANGES.
TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telsgrapli.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A good' list of sales was recorded this morning with a firming in some instances, though a notable exception was for Bank of New Zealand shares. The Government section was again very quiet, with 3Vz per cents uncertain. For the 1939-43 issue a seller offered £108, 110 buyer replying. There were only two buyers in the whole section named for 1949 stock and 1955 bojids. An outstanding feature of the banking division was the price paid for Bank of New Zealand, which * dropped, apparently without reason, from the last figure of £2 9/ to £2 8/3, the market closing 3d on either side. Union and Reserve also looked weaker, sellers of the latter asking £0 11/9- Among miscellaneous scrip Anthony Hordern held yesterday's rate of 17/3. with further buyers at the same price, and Tobaccos firmed steadily, the market closing between £2 1/1 and £2 1/S. New Zealand Newspapers were asked for at £1 13/ without response from holders. A strong buyer for Burns, Philp offered £2 18/, with no sellers. Sellers were generally forced to make concessions in the mining section, though Wailii had firmer offers than ever, the market closing from £1 19/ to £2 without business resulting.
