TRUE BALANCE.
UNEMPLOYMENT FUND APPROXIMATELY £460,000. LABOUR MEMBER'S QUESTION (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, f.iis day. According to the acting Minister of •Employment, Mr. Young, in a statement which he made in the House of Representatives to-day, the true balance of the. Unemployment Fund is approximately £400,000.
Mr. C. 11. Chapman (Wellington North) had asked the Minister of Employment whether in view of the fact that on September 30 the balance to credit in the Unemployment Fund was £1,824,053 lie would take immediate steps to increase payments to the unemployed.
Replying, Mr. Young said the true balance, after deducting taxation paid in advance and taking into account liabilities actually incurred but not paid at that date, was approximately only £4(50,000, and that represented only about five weeks' reserves of allocations. Mr, Chapman would appreciate that the board had no surplus resources available to the extent suggested by the figure quoted. i
