PROBATION GRANTED.
OFFENCE AGAINST GIRL. Probation for twelve months was granted by Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court this morning to David Allan Ferry, who had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court at Botorua xo a charge of carnal knowledge. Mr. R. A. Potter, of Rotorua, who appeared for as;used, said the offences had taken place in an isolated bush district near Rotorua. Although the girl was only 15 years and three months, shelooked every bit of 17. Accused had expressed his willingness to marry her, and it was he who had first told the girl's parents. They had laid a complaint, but had since relented, and now the accused visited their home regularly. There was nothing savouring of viciousness in the offences. The pair were genuinely fond of each other. "It is not the usual case of this kind,'' said his Honor. "Accused has had a good character in the past, and he seems to have a genuine affection for the girl." Accused was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution within twelve months.
