LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
_ • BRISBANE " BENEFIT." MAKISTS BEAT NEWTON. Arranged as a benefit match to the international footballer, H. Brisbane, the Marist v. Newton fixture at Carlaw Park on Saturday marked the concluding match' of the senior League game this" season. The match was played in a sporting spirit all through, and, although not of outstanding merit, was a thoroughly interesting game, victory going to Marist by 30 to 21. Neither side was at full strength, and play suffered to a certain degree. Marist, perhaps, held a territorial advantage right from the opening, but it was in the backs where they showed superiority, their combined play at times being brilliant. The ball was thrown about in great style by both sides, and play was opened up at every opportunity. For the winners, Glover gave a brilliant display, his defence being really highclass. Loder and Smith made the most of any opportunities that came their way, Loder being responsible for a wonderful try, when he ran over half the length of the field to score at the corner. Furlonger and Chalmers pierced the defence with beautiful work on the inside, but Brisbane did not exert himself. Grotte displayed keen anticipation behind the scrum, while Laird, Bakalich and Batchelor were always prominent among the forwards.
Newton used both Crook and Kahu at full-back, but the last-named was palpably out of position. Both wingers, Brady and Stephens, displayed great speed in some determined dashes down the sideline, but Porteous and White were not a happy combination. The pack gave an oatstanding exhibition, the solid work being a feature of the frame. Most prominent, perhaps, were Blacklaws, Quirke and Middleton.
