At Devonport Parnell were sent in to bat after losing the toss from Walters, tlio newly-elected Shore captain. After 20 minutes' tame play Wliitelaw opened his score with a single, to make the total 0. Hay scored the first four of the match when he drove a ball from Sauudors past mid-on. With the score at 25, Wliitelaw cocked one up from Saunders to Walters at first slip. 25— I—4.1 —4. Vivian, the newcomer, played out the rest of the over. The scoring now brightened up a little, and Hay scored two . slashing fours and a couple of braces. In playing a good ball from Saunders, however, he gave Bush a catch at mid-on. Merve Wallace opened his account with a brace down ( the gully, and 52 was "hoisted for 70 minutes' play. Shortly afterwards Vivian tipped one, and Bush, at second slip, made a beautiful catch. With the Wallace brothers together play became even slower. The partnership was broken when M. Wallace skied a ball and Coates took a good running catch off his own bowling. Parnell received another setback when McCoy stepped in front of a straight one from Coates. Stehr opened his account with a single to leg and Parnell reached the- hundred after two hours' play when Wallace drove a loose ball from Webb to the leg boundary. Stehr went to a catch at mid-on off Coates, but Wallace got into the sixties before he was beaten by a shooter from Saunders. At the luncheon adjournment the total was 178 for eight.
