AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
OTAHUHU LABOUR DAY EVENT. A very comprehensive programme was submitted last evening by the management committee of the recently-formed Otahuhu Amateur Athletic Club, when operations for the season were being discussed. It is proposed to hold a big club meeting at Sturgess Park on Labour Day, when many interesting events will be staged. The Auckland Whippet Racing Club has offered to co-operate on that clay, and will run off several handicap events. A novelty will toe the meeting of the club"s fastest sprinter •with the best whippet over a run of 100 yards, the sprinter being conceded a considerable start. . The Otahuhu Wrestling Club has offered to hold a middleweight -wrestling competition, which should attract good entries. A tug-of-war coutcst, on battens, should prove popular, as several teams have already slgnliicd their intention of competing. The early portion of the day -will be taicen up with a parade of decorated trollies, tricycles, prams, etc., and then the school children will appear in a series of running events. A request that dancing items bo staged will receive further attention from the committee.
The senior members of the club will compete for a points trophy in three events — 100 yds sprint, 100 yds hurdles and a 220 yds run. A further trophy for the 440 yds, SSOyds and mile series will be given, and the ladies will have a 70yds and 100 yds sprint. Junior members will be catered for, and, if the suggested programme is carried out, the public will be given a good afternoon's sport. Sturgess Park is now in excellent order, just receutly the Borough Council's 10-ton roller having rolled the playing area into perfect condition, and when the flood lights are completed the club should have the use of a track second to none In the province. Evening points meetings are to be started immediately, and members will have every opportunity to get lit before the season is far advanced.
