MURDER CHARGE.
RAWENE ALLEGATION
MAORIS IN ALTERCATION. MARRIED MAN ON REMAND. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. A charge of murder was laid against a Maori before Messrs. A. E. Andrewes and T. P. Lane, J.P.'s, in the Rawene Police Court yesterday afternoon. The accused man is Puhipi Riwhi, a married man with three children, who lives at Waiotemarama. This charge follows the death in the Rawene Hospital on Wednesday evening of Paui Henare Riwhi, known as Llenry Leaf. It is understood that deceased was a cousin of the accused, and that he also lived at Waiotemarama. It is alleged that, on the afternoon of September 24, there wa"s a dispute between the two men in regard to some land, and that during the disagreement botli men lost their tempers, and deceased received injuries from a spade. He was taken to the Rawene Hospital suffering from head injuries and a broken arm, and was progressing favourably when complications set in on Wednesday, and he died on the evening of that day. An inquest was opened by the coroner, Mr. A. E. Andrewes, yesterday n-.orning, and after evidence of identification had been hoard it was adjourned sine die. In the afternoon accused, who was in custody, was remanded for eight days, and was taken to Auckland to-day to remain at Mount Eden Gaol. - Detective-Sergeant Robertson, of Whangaroi, has gone North to make inquiries. The deceased man was about 37 years of age, and was married. He is survived by his wife and several children. Waiotemarama is a settlement between Waimamaku and Opononi. on the road to Dargaville via the Waipoua Forest.
