BUILDING PROGRESS.
EXTENSION OF PREMISES
FIRM OF WALTER LAMBOURXE, LIMITED. Extensive alterations of premises are being carried out by the firm of Walter Lambourne, Limited, general furnishers and hardware* merchants in Ponsonby Road, to meet the growing needs of the business. The firm was founded 44 rears ago by Mr. AValtcr Lambourne, and within the first year the premises had to be enlarged and the staft increased. In 1899 the building was destroyed by fire, and a new building was erected in sections, one being added every few years as the business grew. For the first eight years during which Mr. Lambourne was in business at the Three Lamps he was also postmaster at Poiiisonby, and held that position until a post office was built for • that part of Auckland. The frontage of the firm's present building has been entirely modernised, and in the interior of the building large windows of futuristic headlights have been let into the walls. Interior remodelling includes removal of the partitions between the different departments. With the upstairs furniture showroom there will bo a total floor space of 24,000 square feet. Looking back over a period approaching half a century, Mr. Lambourne has seen many changes in the Ponsonby district. He said that the improvements being carried out were just another step in the firm's progress. "I and my four sons with me in the business are prepared for further developments when the need arises," he said. There is a large section at the back of the store fronting King Street, and on some future occasion it is proposed to build an extension there.
