ROUND THE HARBOUR.

CENTRE CYCLE RACE. CKAS. DWIGHT THE WINNER. GORDON PATRICK GETS FASTEST TIME, Riding a masterly race Chas Dwlght, scratch junior rider of the Manukau Clu'i, won Saturday's annual harbour race in a most decisive manner when he finished 2.29 ahead of big Rou F. Norman, of Ngarua-

wahia. The race was over a course of -14 miles from Dcvonport, via Birkenhead, Albany Hill, Rlverhead and Henderson to Carrlugton Road, Point Chevalier. For the first half of the race the riders had a stiff head' wind to battle against, while on the metal roads from Albany to Henderson, about 28 miles, dust of interested motorists made for unpleasant racing. The actual starting point was outside the Esplanade Hotel at Devonport, and right on the stroke of 2 p.m. Starter Jack Auckrain sent off the first three riders, R. G -Whitley, R. Eagles and B. V. Taylor. They had 10.0 start from Gordon Patrick, Auckland Club, and Johnnie Brown and Les. Dwight, of the Mauukau Club. For the first 16 miles to the top of the notorious Albany Hill the riders had a hard slog into the north-westerly wind. Whitley broke away early, but R. Campbell (13,0) and J. Pickuell (17.30) were with him at the top of the big hill. Just behind were two big bunches, one of 14 riders, with W. Crocker (14.0) making the pace, and another of 12, with Dave Lawson leading. At the Riverhead check, 25 miles, the leaders were the fast-tiring R. Campbell (15.0) and J. Plcknell (17.30), B. Whitley (19.0) passed 25s later. ' Twenty miles from home Junior Dwight had a share in the lead, and, not content with that, he, at 10 miles to go, on a long downhill section, just free-wheeled away. From then on it was all over bar the shouting. A following motorist thought he would "crack up." but instead he just went steadily away, despite the efforts of big Ron Norman and R. King. The last seven miles was over the concrete highway, over which a light shower had fallen. Dwight was so far in front then that that little interest was taken in. the following groups. At the crossroads at Kumeu, Patrick fell, but Brown eased up, and the pair soon got into a good pace again. But their chances of a placing were not bright, for the front men were reviving with the assistance of the wind. Arab; well-deserved cheers Dwight finished quite fresh-looking, and arter a long interval of 2.29 in came Norman and King In a wheel-to-whcel finish. The rest struggled in in pairs and singly till Patrick ami Brown lent a little excitement. Patrick out-sprinted Brown by two lengths to establish a new course record. The placed riders were: — Chas. T. Dwight, 9.0, Manuitau Club, 2h 10m 17s 1 Ron. F. Norman, 11.0, Manukau Club, 2h 14m 40s .'. 2 R. A.
