NORTH-SOUTH ARRANGEMENTS.

INTEREST IN WAITANGI SHIELD. Final arrangements for the inter-island match were made by the council of the New Zealand Rugby League last evening, when Mr. Cyril Snedden presided. The selection of the North Island team by Mr. A. T. McClymont was approved. Various correspondence from South Island Leagues and the selector, Mr. A. C. Hall, was received and approved. Mr. P. Rogers was appointed referee, and Messrs. O. Chalmers and W. G. Caddy, line umpires.

Officials were deputed to meet the South Island team and North Island players, who will be tendered a welcome by the president at 5.15 p.m. to-day. The visiting players will be guests at the Carlton Cabaret on Saturday evening, after dining with members of the council and other officials. The Taranaki League, holders of the Waitangi Shield, wrote stating that it was prepared to entertain challenges, but not to travel at present. Mr. 0. E. Carlaw, secretary, said that as the result of a trip to Huntly, he had ascertained that the Waikato team which was making a challenge, hoped to arrange for Taranaki to play at< Huntly. It was pointed out that Hawke's Bay had challenged again, but other challengers were bound to obtain preference for future fixtures.

The chairman said that recent encouraging developments with Maori players turning to Rugby League would have to be given proper consideration, and the council might find it necessary to have the Maori Shield competition interests placed in the hands of a special board or committee.

Mr. Doble mentioned that an Auckland committee was meeting that night regarding the Taranaki team to challenge, and some useful proposals might reach the council on the subject. It was decided that Waitangi "Shield matters in the meantime be left with the executive of the council, and that further action as regards control be dealt with following a conference with Mr. J. Rukutai.

The terms, dates and venue for fixtures in the approaching visit of Western Suburbs' team (Sydney), were provisionally discussed. Advice was received during the meeting that Western Suburbs, who meet Eastern Suburbs in the grand final of the premiership on Saturday, were leaving Sydney on September 18 for New Zealand.

A letter from Mr. .T. IT. Mostyn, of the St. George Club, Sydney, advised on the position of code matters in Sydney, and incidentally mentioned that a cliib team of nboriginees was being organised in New South Wales, and might eventually be the first Australian native side to tour out of that country. 1
