TE AWAMUTU HORSES.
A. COOK'S TEAM.
CANDIDATES TOR MARTON
PROGRESS OF KING'S KNAVE,
There has been very little doing in the way of fast work on the Te Awamutu tracks for some two months, this having been the slackest period experienced for eome years. A. Cook has had* a useful string in work, and without exception all his horses have wintered well. He will have a fairly formidable team to commence the season, among them being Jonathan, King's Knave, Namakia, Wait and See, Knigut of Australia, Spearwin, and the two-year-olde Lady liuler (Chief Kuler—Tinewere), Galilee (Chief Rider—Lady Bede), a filly by General Lateur—Proclice, a colt by Iliad—Philomela, a colt by Magpie, and a colt by General Latour. Foremost of this team is Jonathan, who is getting through much useful work, and is in wonderful shape. Even eo early it is doubtful if the son of Thespian has ever looked better. King's Knave, who is booked for Marton, is the only one of Cook's string to be given any fast work, and [lie has been doing everything asked of him.in a pleasing manner. His Marton prospects look very bright. • He' will be accompanied by the two-year-old Lady Ruler. This filly is well forward, anil posseeses a nice turn of speed;
The only other representative from here for Marton is Solarium. This fellow continues to work along nicely, and is in excellent condition. Jn addition to his track work he has been doing a fair amount of work on the hills adjoining the course. This should be his chance to make amends for his recent failures.
lesterday morning the last work was carried out on the com-se proper, on which the flags were about 20ft out. King's Knave was first out, and covered five furlongs in pleasing style, but was not timed. Solarium was sent away from the seven-furlong barrier, and moving very freely finished his task in 1.31. He ran the first two furlongs in 25 l Ae, and the half-mile in 50s. This was a useful effort. On the inner tracks were Jonathan, Knight of Australia, Spearwin, JSTamakia and Wait and See.
An audition to the ranks of trainers is J. Alurtagh, who has taken over the Racing Club's etables. His only charge at present is Duet Up.
