AIR RACE RISKS.
FLYING WITHOUT PERMITS
LONDON, August 2,
Although Bulgaria, Hungary and Turkey have refused general permission for the air race competitors to fly over their territory, they explain they are most interested in the race and can assist more satisfactorily by requiring individual permits.
Greece similarly requires individual permits from competitors whose countries are not affiliated with the International Convention for Air Navigation. Other countries en route have granted general permission to fly over them, subject to various conditions.
However, many competitors intend flying high over the Great Circle course, which passes over these countries, disregarding the countries' rulings, and will thereby risk disqualification according to the race rules, which, however, it is understood, will be inoperative unless opponents protest. Such competitors also risk a forced landing in prohibited territory, which probably will be fatal to success.
Supplementary regulations announce that the International Federation of Aeronautics' rule, over-riding race rules, permits protests within eight days of the judge's announcement, instead of 12 hours. The race will start from either Hatfield or Gravesend.
