ROTARY CLUB.

REPORT FROM CONVENTION

ILLNESS OF ME. J. M. A. ILOTT

President "Laurie" Taylor presided at to-day's lunch meeting of the Auckland Eotary Club, held in Milne and Choyce'a reception hall. There was a large attendance, and amongst the visitors were:—Messrs. D. J. Wesney (Invereargill), L. Ewert (Rotorua), F. C. Baines (Heleiusville), W. Ramsey (London), J. Benjie (Christchurch), Geo. Coles and W. J.. Thompson (Melbourne), C. H. Johaiißon (Fremantle) and W. P. Walker (Wellington).

Messrs. A. U. Wells and A. W. Baker were installed as members.

The chief speaker was District Governor Kotarian Tom Armstrongs of 2s~ew South Wales, who is returning from the international convention held at Detroit in June.

Prior to giving his impressions of the conference, Rotarian Armstrong made detailed reference to the serious illness which had befallen New Zealand District Governor John Uott. The illnees had apparently been brought about through infection arising from the eating of ripe olives. A characteristic of this complaint was that it paralysed thfe functions of the throat and mouth, and the chances of recovery were considered to be less than one in a /.ousand. However, Mr. Ilott was now well on the road to complete recovery, although hie medical advisers urged that •Mβ official activities ehould be materially curtailed. When back to New Zealand. he ehould not be- asked to address meetings or to take any part in the organisation of the district conference to be held in Timaru. He wae expected to return early in October.

At the conference,, said the speaker, a New Zealand club, namely, the Christchurch body, had attained the first attendance award, being represented by two delegates, while Melbourne had been in second place. He gave a striking description of the opening ceremony at Detroit, and stressed the advantage of delegates from so many diverse nationalities having" the opportunity to meet "and discuss Under favourable surroundings various aspects of international problems. He- invited New Zealand Hotarians to participate in an Australasian Rotary Conference to be held in Melbourne next March.

The vote of thanks was moved by Kotarian T. U. Wells.
