NATIONAL COUNCIL.

MILK PROTEST REPORT. At tlie mooting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women held in their rooms last evening, Mrs. Hugh Kasper, the president, presided over a particularly large attendance of members. Before business was commenced a motion of sympathy -with the relatives of the late Mrs. Lovell Smith and Canon C. H. Grant Cowen was passed, members standing in silence. * A brief report on the progress of the petitions in conncction with the repeal of the Milk Act was given by Miss Ellon Melville, who .said that so tar over 20,000 signatures had been obtained.' Finance had been arranged and quite a number of local bodies and other organisations were giving their support. Petitions had been sent to every Auckland member of Parliament. "In tho beginning," said Miss Melville, "this protest was looked upon somewhat as a joke, but when the bundles of petitions began to arrive they were received in a different frame of mind. A decided impression has been made upon members of Parliament ns to the disapproval of the public in the passing of an Act in the way this Milk Act was passed." A brief resume of the work being done by the members of tho Better Films Committee was given by Miss B. Carnaclian, and a lengthy discussion as to tho suitability of many of the films shown in Auckland took place. .In connection with tho child welfare report submitted, by the committee who investigated, it was decided that a special meeting be called to deal with it. Delegates were urged to give the matter their whole-hearted consideration. Tho following resolutions were passed: "That the Minister for Justice be asked to suppress through tho Press the announcement of the clay and hour of execution of a prisoner in the Dominion, as it affects some women in a delicate state of health." "Considering the inadequate wages received by relief workers, it is requested that the Government grant free railway passes to married men wishing to spend the week-end with their families." The best wishes of the council were extended to Miss Melville and Miss Basten, who left by the Niagara for Honolulu to represent New Zealand at tho Pan-Pacific Conference. Greetings from the Rev. Wilna Constable, who is in America, were conveyed to tho meeting by Mrs. A. D. Campbell. The following new associate members were enrolled: Mcsdames Edward Anderson, T. Lyon, C. Bailey, Baker, Leonard", ' Bragg, Leary, Misses. Edith Sutherland, Irene Tanner and M. Russell.
