MARIST ONE POINT BETTER.
It was only in the second half that Marist were better than College Rifles, on No. 3, on Saturday; but then they were, nnd definitely so. Marist won by 12 points to 11. In the first spell College were on top just as definitely. Later, however, the two or three men in the Marist van who were "shiners" buckled down to hard work in the tight, and it made all the difference. McGrory, Judd and Fowler were the best of the pack, particularly the first named. Clark got the ball away nicely from behind the scrum, while Rogers did well at his spell at full-back.
It was a pity that the blue pack lost command of things at the vital time, half way through the second spell, for the Rifles' backs were a much better combination than Marist. McCormick, Wales and Brown went well together, and each played a fine game. In the second spell Brown w ; as unlucky not to score the try which would have given his side the game. He just tipped the corner flag as he grounded the ball after a splendid run. Watson and Ware showed up on Saturday, but the two best were Stewart and Batty, particularly the last-named, who was always on the ball.
