RACING AT TRENTHAM

THE WINTER MEETING. SUCCESS OF BILLY BOY. DAVOLO WINS WHYTE HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Special to- "Star.") WELLIXGTOX, Tuesday.' Good win dividends were a feature of the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting at Trentham today, four of the winners, Taura Lad, Bay Tree, Royal . Lineage and Davolo paying double figures, while two others were not far short of that mark. Every favourite was beaten, although three, Unitali, Hunting Jay and Cyclonic, returned place dividends.. Auckland horses failed to do as well as expected, although Billy Boy won the Wellington S.tee-plechase, in which he was also successful,; in 1932. Neil was second in the Matai Steeplechase, and Lord Val was third : in the Whyte Handicap. Rain fell in-the' morning, hut it cleared, and the weather was excellent afterwards, tihe day'being bright and fairly w-arni for' this time of the year. The course was: very holding and sonic of the candidate's' failed to handle the conditions at all well. An inquiry was held concerning interference with' -Wee .Pat by Imperial Prince in the-'-Trentham Hurdles, and after hearing the evidence of the riders concerned the judicial committee decided that the occurrence was accidental. There was brilliant sunshine early, but later the sky became overcast. The track was heavy 'and* holding.; There was a fair attendance. The totalisator handled £22,317 (win £10,408, -iplacje' £11,909), against £28,158 oil: the firstday last year, a decrease of £5841. I Taura Lad Surprises. In the opening event, the Matai Steeplechase, Henry of Navarre led out from Postman, Neil, Taura Lad and Jayson, with Fine Acre, Umtali and Cultivator last. There was not much change till six furlongs from home, when Henry of Navarre blundered, while Unitali started to move up. Neil and Taura Lad led L'mtali over the last fence, Taura Lad winning by a short neck from Neil, with Umtali, who tired, four lengths away. Cultivator just beat Fine Acre and Jayson for fourth. The winner raced badly in Hawke's Bay recently, but gave a good display here, wearing down Neil, who looked a winner after jumping the last fence. Henry of Navarre will make a good steeplechaser with experience. Hybiscus, Dick Whittington and Royal Dance were the early leaders ' in the Woburn Handicap, with Bay Tree, Hunting Jay and Brown Pearl in the next bunch. Bay Tree ana Hunting Jay shot out when the coiirse proper was reached, Bay Tree staying on the better to win by a neck. Timorous finished well four lengths away, just in front of Swift and Sure, Brown Pearl, Horowhenua, Passion Fruit and Argument. The- winner's performance was impressive, his! stamina enabling him to win after Hunting Jay had headed him a furlong from the post. Brown Pearl was staying on -well, while Horowhenua also was going Well at the end. Moonbeam, wide out, showed early speed. - Verden Falls. Verden soon took charge in the Vittoria Hurdles, with Royal Lineage, Playground and Illuminate next. Esteem made a move along the back and was in front at the far turn. Verden started to drift at this stage and was well beaten, when he fell at the second to last hurdle. Royal Lineage and Esteem turned for home together, the former winning .by three lengths. Silver Division, six lengths away, just beat Htintique, with Royal- ljimond, Wilton, Emotion and Illuminate following. The winner, a brother to Royal Limond, was always going well and stayed on better than Esteem. Princess Doreen, Lack and Royal Hunting were the early leaders in the Stewards' Handicap, while on reaching the course proper Coypist, Royal Amphora, Palermo and' Silver Streak were handy. Copyist was in front a hundred yards from the post, but Palermo then headed him, winning by a short length, with Royal Hunting and Lack in the places. Copyist faded into fourth position in the last few strides, Princess Doreen, Lady Ronald and Royal Ainphora being next. Greek Gold and Water Power were disappointing. The winner stayed on better than the others and revelled in the soft going. The Chief Event. The Wellington Steeplechase provided a line • contest. Thurina and Riotous went off in the lead, Valpeen being next, then Billy Boy and Patutahi, with Membo last."The two pacemakers opened out a gap of. a dozen lengths.. They were practically together till starting the last round, when Thurina drew clear. Billy Boy ran "past Valpeen along the back and headed the tiring Riotous nearing the straight. Thurina still had a lead of four lengths at the last fence, but he tired a little in the run home, Billy Boy beating him by a good length. Riotous, though tired, hung on for third place, with Valpeen and Simeon following. Membo missed the last fence. Copey lost his rider half way through the journey. Patutahi slipped into a fence about five furlongs from home. He broke a leg and was destroyed. Billy Boy registered a fine performance, but the lack of a race brought defeat for Thurina, who gave a brilliant exhibition of jumping. These two had the finish to themselves, the others tiring. In the Trentham Hurdles, High Grader led to the third hurdle, which he hit hard, losing his rider. Gold Knight then took charge from Rasouli and Free Air. Going to the back Blacksmith joined Gold Knight in front, Rasouli. Cruaehan and Free Air being next. Gold Knight retired five- furlongs from home. Rasouli then moved up, being with Blacksmith to the straight and going on to win easily. Stanchion finished well to get second. Blacksmith, though tired, lasted long enough to beat Crunchan for third. Callamart. staying on, was fifth, then Free Air and True Shaft. The last home were Cargen, Wee Pat and Imperial Prince, who never looked .dangerous. Rasouli gave E. J. Ellis his second success of the day, Palermo having joined his team recently. > Kasouli was always travelling well and this was his best effort since he went to the South Island. An inquiry was held into interference with Wee Pat. alleged to be caused by Imperial Prince, but the stewards decided that it was accidental. The Whyte Handicap. Rebel Star was smartest out in the Whyte Handicap, with Lord Val, Davolo,. Lady Spy, Ida Merling, View Halloo and King Musk handy, while after two furlongs Curie also joined in. There was little change to the home turn, where Davolo took second place,'"while he went on in' the straight to beat Rebel Star easily by two lengths. Lord Val hung 6n to beat his bracket mate. Prince Val, for third, with Curie, Gainsfid, Gustavo and View Halloo next. First and second hail from Ri'ccartorr. The winner is at his best at a mile, and looks a great prospect for next-seasou. Rebel Star kept up his reputation for'consistency and should win sooii. Wee Musk was soon in charge in the Te Aro Handicap, with Cyclonic, Imperial Spear. Royal Gallant. Scarlet Rambler, Mercian Prince, Nightform and Vocal handy;- There was not much change to

the straight, where Wee Musk and Imperial Spear retired. Vocal came through on the rails, beating Mercian Prince by a neck, while a length away Cyclonic was a head in front of Sunny Bachelor, with Scarlet Rambler, Xightfortti. and Royal Gallant close up. The winner, from P. T. Hogan's Washdyke stable, finished strongly. Imperial Spear disappointed by stopping badly in the straight. Scarlet Rambler improved on recent form and seemed a trille unlucky. Later results are:—STEWARDS' HANDICAP of £250. Six furlongs. ■ . . 2—2—I'ALKKMO, 1) g, aged, by Sollerino—Lady Pal (Mr. \V."!L. Milue), 7.13—L.
