DEATH SENTENCES ON ABOS. (Received 11 a.m.) CANBERRA, this day. Mr. J. A. Lyons, Prime Minister, announced that the Federal Cabinet had decided to commute to imprisonment for life the sentences of death passed on eight aborigines for the murder of two white prospectors on Fitzmaurice River. The modification of these death sentences is in accordance with the long standing policy of the Federal Government not to inflict capital punishment upon aborigines for crimes committed outside the sphere of civilisation in North Australia.
