SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

There was an unusually large attendance at the At Home of the St. Andrew's Ladies' Auxiliary, held yesterday afternoon in the Penwomen's Clubroom. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. J. H. Will, who spoke on the national dishes of Scotland under the heading of "A Scottish Kitchen." Mrs. Will spoke of the traditional oatcakes, girdle scones, Scotch buns and mealy puddings, and illustrated her address with examples of these good things, which she had provided for afternoon tea. Those contributing to the musical programme were Miss Salmon, Mrs. A. Wyness, Mrs. Recce. Miss Lilian Braithwaitc acted as accompanist and also as a soloist. Mrs. A. Muirhead, president of the auxiliary, presented Mrs. Will with a posy of violets. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. * * » * The Manurewa Tennis Club's annual dance took ' place last night in the Manurewa Picture Theatre, about 100 couples being present. The Blind Institute Band, with Lieutenant Bowes in charge, played the dance music. During the evening the trophies won during the season were presented to the winners by Mr. and. Mrs. Fleming. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Mrs. L. Pegler, and the secretary of the club, Mrs. Lew Smith. An exhibition dance by Miss Barry and Mr. Edney was a feature of the evening. Trophies presented were as follow: — Singles championships, Mr. R. Bennet and Mies E. Ohlsen; handicaps, Mr. R. Bennet and Miss Ferguson; doubles championship, Messrs. R. Bennet and D. Walisch and Mrs. Lukka and Miss Finlayson; doubles handicap, Messrs. L. Pegler and W. Cox and Misses Harris and Ferguson; combined championship, Mrs. Lukka and Mr. W. Cox; combined handicap, Mrs. King and Mr. P. Dreardon. A trophy presented by Mrs. Lukka was won by Miss Flo Farrar.
