BROOKLANDS DEATH.
BRITISH EMPIRE TROPHY.
LONDON, June 24,
John Houldsworth, a racing motorist, driving a Bugatti in the 300-mile British Empire trophy handicap at Brooklands violently skidded on a sharp bend. The car turned two somersaults and Houldsworth fractured his skull. He died later in hospital.
Earl Howe crashed at a bend and his car turned round twice, ran backwards into a fence and was wrecked. The driver was not injured.
G. E. T. Eyston, driving an M.G. Magnette, and averaging 80.01 miles an hour, won the race. Whitney Straight (America), driving a Maserati and averaging 82.45 miles an hour, was second; E. Eceles (Bugatti), BI.YO miles aii hour, was third; and John Cobb (Australia), in an Alfa-Eomeo, at 81.30 miles an hour, was fourth.
