AUCKLAND CITY MISSION.

ANNUAL MEETING. A large number of friends and sympathisers in the work of the Auckland City Mission attended the fourteenth annual meeting held last evening. His Grace the Archbishop was present. In presenting the annual report, the Rev. Jasper Calder referred to the past year as being undoubtedly the most difficult in his long experience. The strain on the resources of the mission had been terrible, and there seemed to be no sign whatever of the country having turned the mythical corner. The outstanding bright spot of the year was the munificent gift by Mrs. C. A. Whitney of a beautiful residence at Campbell's Bay, now named "Whitneydale" after the donor, and which is proving such a boon as a convalescent home in conjunction with the mission's medical clinic. Mr. Calder expressed his gratitude for the wonderful help received during the year from the various parishes in the diocese, particularly in the matter of harvest festivals, and stated that the amount of relief given was far greater than any previous year. Mr. Julius Ilogben, chairman of the ■missiou executive, stated that valuing at a low figure the material help given, the relief distributed by the mission during the past year exceeded £6000. Archbishop Avcrill spoke at considerable length. "This has been a dreadful year for everybody," he said. "When I came here v to-night I did not expect to hear such a magnificent achievement by the mission as shown in. the report and statement of accounts. The City Mission is the handmaid of the diocese, and we look upon it as doing our social work. The number - of patients dealt with by Dr. Barraclough in the Free Medical Clinic, some 8300, is astounding, nearly 3000 more than the previous year, and this amply bears out the doctor's statement at the last annual meeting, that the stamina of the people, particularly the children, was rapidly becoming undermined." The Archbishop mentioned that Messrs. Julius Hogben and T. X. Smallwood would again represent the standing committee on the mission executive. The following were re-elected to the executive: Messrs. Edward Smith, H. Graham, G. Halsev Rignall, A. Lane, Jas. Macgregor, and T. A. Crotty.
