MR. W. H. TRIGGS.

FORMER NEWSPAPEE EDITOR. A well-known journalist ami former member of the Legislative Council. Mr. William Henry Triggs, died in Wellington yesterday morning, aged 79. He was born in Chiehester, Sussex. England, and entered journalism at the age of 17 years. Coining to New Zealand in IS7S, lie joined the staff of the "Evening Post." being subsequently a sub-editor. In 188.") he was appointed editor of the Tiniiiru "Herald," and later joined the editorial staff of the Christchurch "Press."' He visited England in 1894, being the guest of the English Institute of Journalists at its annual conference. He was also New Zealand representative at the first International Press Congress in Antwerp. Mr. Triggs returned to New Zealand the same year, and was appointed associate editor of the "Press," in conjunction with the late Mr. J. S. Guthrie. In 1805 he became editor, which position he held for 24 years. For the last 10 years of his editorship Mr. Triggs was also a director of the journal. He was elected

in 1001 a fellow of the English Institute of Journalists. A second visit was paid to England by Mr. Triggs in 1904, and a third in 3910* He also spent some time on the Continent, returning via Canada. He was on a world tour at the close of the Great War. and was present at the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Mr. Triggs was New Zealand correspondent for the Melbourne "Argus," and an occasional contributor to English magazines. • Appointed a member of the Legislative Council in 1918, Mr. Triggs retired in 1032. For a number of years he lived with his son, Mr. J. S. Triggs, of Huapai, but for the hist few months had resided in Wellington. He is-survived by Mrs. Triggs, one daughter and two sons. MRS. COCK, OF NEW PLYMOUTH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) XEW PLYMOUTH, this day. The death has occurred of Mrs. Cock, wife of Mr. Richard Cock, well known pioneers of New Plymouth and district. Mrs. Cock, who suffered an injury nine weeks ago, was 7S years of age. Born in Bristol, England, she was brought to Xew Zealand as a child'. For many years she shared in the social welfare, of Xew Plymouth as Mayoress. It fell to her to "".switch on" the first municipal electrical installation in 1906, and during the war she was one of the first members of the Patriotic Society. She was also one of the lirst members of the Phinkct Society and Victoria League, being patroness ol" the Plunkct Society.
