This can be the proud claim of London's underground railway. It has 1600 cars which travel 200,000 car miles a day, and carry as many as 1,200,000 passengers a day. . They are run by a etaff of 4000 men by day and 350 by night. There are 159 miles of track, and every foot of it is inspected'every night. Every car is cleaned every three days, inspected every three weeks, and overhauled and rebuilt every 15 months. The number of tickets bought in a year is, roughly, 300,000,000, and they weigh over 220 tons. The Underground has automatic ticket machines and escalators, and every possible device for mak : ing Hβ passengers safe. The cars are steel and fireproof. The train cannot start until the doors are closed. The driver and guar can talk to each other by 'microphones'. Aud all that the pasIsenger pays for thi% amazing service is -a ; penny a niile! .'
