OLD MEN'S QUARREL. INMATES OF INFIRMARY. THREE WEEKS' IMPRISONMENT An inmate of the Auckland .Infirmary whose head, left hand and right wrist were heavily bandaged, appeared in the Police Court this morning to tell how he had been belaboured by a walkin"- 'stick wielded by another inmate ot the infirmary. Complainant, who is to years old. was allowed to sit down while giving his evidence. Daniel Barry (01), a gardener, tor whom Mr. Nob'.e appeared,, was charged with, assaulting John. Richard Wall. He pleaded not guilty. . _ Sub-Inspector Edwards said the evidence would show that at 5 p.m. on June 4 Wall was walking along Green Lane Road when he met accused, who belaboured him with his walking stick. Complainant's injuries required med:cai attention, and he had not been able to appear in Court until to-day. Complainant, in evidence, said that he was attacked by Barry in front of Dr. Maguire'a residence and was hit on the head and arms. He had, he said, given accused no provocation. A suggestion by Mr. Noble that complainainThad called accused a "frightful name" and had often annoyed him was indignantly denied by Wall. "I have not spoken to him for two years and a half," he declared. A relief worker living in Green Lane Road said that he heard a lot of shouting, and on going to investigate sawaccused striking complainant with his stick. Witness separated both men, each of whom he knew well. Barry said to Wall, "You have been looking for it, and now you have got it." Dr. C. E. Maguire, superintendent of the infirmary, said he had attended to Wall after the assault. . Wall was bleeding profusely from two seal]) wounds, one of which required two stitches. Complainant also suffered abrasions and bruises on the hands and wrists. To the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, witness said that Barry had complained previously that Wall had annoyed him, but complainant had always denied thut ho had done so. Personally, witness regarded Wall as a quiet and inoffensive man, but Barry was inclined to be quarrelsome. . Mr. Noble commented that complainant had not been as badly injured as one would think from his present appearance. "He is bandaged up like a racehorse," commented counsel. "Yes, and he will go back there tor another three weeks," said Mr. Hunt when counsel pointed out that accused had already- spent one week in gaol. "He is sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment.
