FALLEN GIANTS.
KAURI TAP ROOTS ROTTED. EFFECT OF SANDSTONE SOIL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, this day. According to bushmen at present working at Trounson Kauri Park preparing for the milling of thirty or more trees which were blown down last winter, the tap roots of each kauri have rotted.
The bushmen's theory is that when the tap roots reach sandstone they commence to rot. The lateral roots only were growing, consequently when gales came the trees were easily blown over. The men consider a number of trees in the park are likewise affected.
