HOTEL THEFTS.
PAEROA MEN ARRESTED. FISH AND PLUCKED FOWLS, (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent) PAEROA, this day. A sequel to the arrest of two Te Aroha Road residents about midnight on May 19 by Constable Dalbeth, following complaints of thefts from Paeroa hotels, was heard when Rehi Williams, labourer, of Paeroa, was charged with stealing two plucked fowls and some fish, sausages and cooked meat, of a total value of 11/, the property of E. P. Fathers. Sam Sampson was charged with being in possession or two plucxed fowls, well knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained, also with the theft of one double sheet and one face towel, the property of Ma the w Crosby. Pleas of guilty were entered to each charge. Constable Maiden told the Court that the articles were found in possession of the men, who gave statements admitting the thefts. Counsel submitted that, having gone in search of liquor and been refused, the men had taken the goods in a spirit of spite. Both men were slightly under the influence of liquor. The Court said that although usually imprisonment was the punishment for hotel thefts, fines would this time be inflicted. Accused were fined 30/, and allowed one month to pay. Prohibition orders were ordered to be taken out.
