DAVIS CUP.
NEW ZEALAND ELIMINATED. AUSTRALIA-JAPAN SINGLES. FRANCE TOO GOOD FOR GERMANY. (Keceived 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 10. New Zealand "was eliminated from the Davis Cup yesterday at Prague by CzechoSlovaia, when, in the final singles, Hecht defeated Andrews, 6—l, 6 —l, 6—o; and Menzel defeated Malfroy, 6 —l, 6 —o, 6—l. Menzel fought each point and gavo Malfroy no opportunity. The New Zealander was unlucky with many of his returns, but won an occasional game. Andrews was tired and nervous and over-lobbed. He never won his service. Hecht revealed a capacity for exploiting his opponent's weaknesses. At Eastbourne on Saturday Australia eliminated Japan from the Davis Cup contest, the final single resulting:—Turnbull defeated Yamagishi, 6 —4, 7—5, 9—7; and Fujikura defeated McGrath, 6—4, 5—7, 6-2, S-6. Australia had secured the winning points on Friday by winning the doubles, after having won the first two singles. France eliminated Germany at Paris by 3 rubbers to 2. The remaining singles this afternoon resulted: —A. Merlin (France) beat Nourney, 6—4, 7—5, 6—2; Von Cramm (Germany, who boat Merlin oil Friday) beat Boussus, 6 —l, 6 —o, o—6, 6 —4. On Saturday Borotra and Brugnon had beaten von Cramm and Denken in the doubles, 5 —7, 6—2, 6—4, 10—8. France now meets Australia in the semifinal of the European zone, while Italy meets Czecho-Slovakia. Both matches must be played before June 21, the final to be played before July 16. In the doubles on Friday Malfroy and Stedman defeated Menzel and Heclit, 7 —5, 6-4, 7—5.
