SOME FINE CARDS. AN INFORMAL CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF. AND A CHASE. (By RUBBERCORE.) Hector' Morpetli ? s win in the senior bogey iit One Tree Hill was a really good effort, as, though struggling a little over the first nine, lie played really good golf on the homeward run. He opened steadily, keeping on the trail of bogey till the seventh, where he miss-hit his second, but recovered well. A pulled second to the eighth did not promise well, but a perfect chip shot did away with the necessity to use his putter. Made bold by this deliverance, he then reeled off 4, #~3, '2, and continuing to play well recorded 37 for the last half. It is morp-etli's bugbear that he invariably mixes an excellent half with a bad break. Even the great, however, know golf as "an 'umblin" game. Another performance of merit at this club was A. E. Greensmitlrs win in the junior medal. Gieensmith displays promise, though peculiarly enough was guilty of a number of errors in his winning score. Good recoveries were, however, capped by excellent green work. Good Scores at North Shore. That conditions were good at North Shore was indicated in the excellence of the scoring. Stevens and Oliver distinguished themselves in the senior medal, and the latter can be accounted unfortunate that the count back should lia.ve gone against liim. Steven's 34 homeward was, however, a really sound effort. The pace was even hotter: in the junior event, in which P. L. Horrocks, Burkitt and W. Maclndoe tied with net 64. Burkitt's for the last nine gave him the trophy. Having regard to the shortness of the course the club should explore every possibility of providing holes of added length at the earliest possible date. Akarana Tournament.

Play on the opening day of Akarana s tournament was not marked by any round of outstanding merit. The qualifying round for the championship .was in the nature of a triumph for W. Greenbank, the local player, whose round was but one stroke better than that of the hardy Tom Clark, of Middlemore. A point not to be overlooked is, however, ■ that ■ the pail splendidly led a field which included a number of more highly-rated players. In view of the number of entrants, play on the second day commenced so early as eight o'clock. The early bird may, ot course, deserve his share of the worms, but in winter time —well! Features of the second day were .H. Cullen s defeat, of Greenbank and G. Coltman's meritorious win from W. S. Ralph. Cullen and Greenbank played shaky golf to the turn, hut Cullen then had an inspired runjof 4, 4, 3, 2, 4, to gain a lead which Greenbank could not wrest from him.

Against Ralph, Coltman 'early dominated the game, and when the former developed the staggers on the green-r-he was several times.guilty of taking three putts after the ninth —his position had become critical. Ail injudicious choice of clubs cost Coltman the 'fifteenth, where liis second shot sailed far; into the gorse. One down with three to play, Ralph played a perfect tee shot to the short sixteenth, where his putt stymied Coltman. This green was the scene of an extraordinary incident, for as Coltman was considering how best to overcome the difficulty, Ralph s ball obligingly rolled a couple of inches, leaving the way clear for Coltman to hole his putt. Needless to add he accepted the deliverance, and holding on to his slender lead, won at the eighteenth. R. E. Rainger also upset calculations in disposing'of. T. E. Clark. This lad plays froni, twelve, arid his performance was a •go;od one. He was, however, overwhelmed in tho afternoon by B. G. Thomson, whose siege-gun tactics from the tee enabled him to attack continuously. J. M. Coltman, who went down to Gordon Biss, experienced a rather nerve-wracking morning round against J. H. Earle, the Maungakiekie youth having holed everything in sight l —and several putts which weren t. Coltman, however, .was not idle during this barrage, for lie holed a chip for the 2 at the short seventh, which rather disconcerted his opponent.

A Culprit Run To Earth

The day was not without its excitement in other spheres, for a small boy, who forsook the paths of rectitude for earthly gain,.was seen flying across country with a ball which one gathered had but a few minutes previously been the property of another. The pursuit one likened to a Great Northern tryout, for the culprit was nabbed on the post about three miles and a half in the direction of Mount Roskill. One felt his chances of escape limited when "Ginger" followed liim in full cry, for those of that colouring are nothing, if not persistent.' Later in the afternoon a very contrite small boy—ho had been forcibly propelled back to Akarana —earnestly begged forgiveness of Dr. Paterson, who, being very human, viewed justice in the light of admonished aod discharged. Considering the heavy going both pursued and pursuer rap well. Many championships would be brighter for an incident of the kind. . . Semi-final results for the championship saw Biss quickly open up a gap on Thomson, who faced a deficit of holes at the turn. Thomson then, however, fought stubbornly to become only one down with three holes to go. It was then anybody's game until the pendulum swung in Biss' favour at the seventeenth, where the game ended. The other pair, G. Coltman and H. Cullen, were never separated by any real margin, though on the play Coltman perhaps deserved his one up win. In the final Biss was a little the steadier of the pair, though at no stage was his position secure. Biss owed his win primarily to the two holes lead he had wrested at the turn. It was a happy circumstance that the finalists should have learned their game at Akarana. Each is to be congratulated on so splendid a showing. In the semi-finals of the handicap event J. P. Wells and J. S. Kidd won through only after close matches. M. Kiely had

Wells in difficulties on numerous occasions, but the latter, though unorthodox in style, displays no small amount of initiative. Kidd, after disposing of V. Smith at the seventeenth, quite overwhelmed Wells in the final. The feeling was that Kidd was rather masquerading on his middle handicap, but it is a fact that he played better golf sit Akarana than for some time past. He has, however, many shots in his bag, and a fine command of length, and will soon see a much lower mark. At the conclusion of the prize-giving, -Messrs. W. S. Balph (Auckland) and Percy Wrigley (Wellington) congratulated the club on its successful tournament. Thanks were especially due to Basil ,T. Smith, the club's professional, for his able handling of the starter's duties, and to President C. M. Cox and Rolf Porter for so splendidly seeing to the lot of the visitors.
