RUGBY FOOTBALL.

AUCKLAND UNION.

HIGH STANDARD OF FLAY.

MR. HARRY FROST IS PLEASED,

Mr. Harry Frost, chairman of the Auckland' Rugby Football Union, no doubt had good cause at last night's meeting to speak enthusiastically over' the pronounced improvement so far this season in tlie all-round etandard of play in the 6enior and junior club competitions. He made tliis eulogism when thanking the respective managers of the representative teams which defeated Waikato and Thames (at Hamilton and the goldfields town) for their reports. This noteworthy feature, continued Mr. Frost, was brought about to a large extent by more assiduous attention to, and concentration on, methodical training, and to a closer observance -of the coaches' advice and instructions. There were other causes, too. As regards senior players, the forthcoming alteration in . that competition had, without doubt, added zest and. enthusiasm among club .players and supporters. This improvement in play and tactics was reflected in the greatly increased public'support, and was a source of much gratification to the union. In conclusion, Mr. Frost said that the future of the game in Auckland has not appeared as bright for some years as it does this season. A and B Competitions. Regarding the formation of the senior A and B competitions at the end "of the first round of matches,' the committee decided to delete the part of the previous motion carried, that aIL teams in the new B section shall' start level without championship points, and insert the following clause: That all teams competing in the second round of the senior B championship will retain points already gained 'by them (whether in A or B grade), and thereafter the champion senior B team found in the usual way, but the team vbich will go up to the A grade will be the team gaining the most. ; points in the second round only, regardless of which team wins the senior B championship. It was decided to recommend the reinstatement of Wilford Hassan to the New Zealand Union.

Subject to a match being available on June 16, it was resolved to grant a request from the Otahuliu .Club for .permission to hold a charge day at Otahiihu' on that date. c ..

The Waihi Union wrote .requesting ;a' visit from a senior A grade' .team, and ~it was resolved to refer the matter tp the match committee. .v" * t ■- A meeting of club coaches is to be convened immediately suitable arrangements can be made. The entertainment committee was deputed... to organise, the details. Selectors are to be appointed to chOQse twp teams from the senior B competition for a trial .game on June 16, in view of|a proposed match against the.Kaipara Uiiion in the latter's-district. It • was decided to ask the Kaipara Union if June 23 iwould best suitable date for the match.

H. Frdst and A. Tilly were appointed to represent the union at farewell functions to be tendered the Dominion Empire Ganges representatives tomorrow.

The transfers;* of O. Knight, from Grammar Old J>oy£ to Poneonby, atid -R. Shkw, from . Cambridge to the Porisonby Cliib, were approved.

* N.Z. TRIAL AT AUCKI^ND.

SOUTHLAND'S IDEAS ON GAME. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The recommendation from the Southland Rugby Union that the North v. South Island match to be played at Auckland on July 7 should be made a straightout trial match, for All Black honours, and that the matter of whom should play should be left to the New Zealand selectors, was not approved by the management committee of the New 'Zealand Rugby Union at its meeting last night.:; v ;,'•••

The committee voted £40 each to the Jtago, North Auckland and the Poverty Bay Unions to subsidise tours by representative teariis.

IMPERIAL CONFERENCE.

"BAGGAGE MAN" FOR AUSTRALIA.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. ■ Advice has been received that an Imperial Rugby conference will be held in England next, year, during the tour of the New Zealand team. Mr. M. Johnson, of Auckland, has been appointed baggage manager for the New Zealand team going to Australia this year.

Mr. M. Johnson, of Ponsonby, although not a public ifigure, is very well known and highly popular' among the Rugby players of Auckland, where' for some years he has been masseur to the Auckland representative players and to the Ponsonby Club. He is an efficient masseur, and a cheerful personality. As a. railway man by occupation, he has special qualifications for superintending the handling of a team's baggage on tour.

WING-FORWARDS AGAIN.

A BREACH OF FAITH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON,'this day. "They are honourable agreements and ought to be honoured," remarked Mr.-S. Dean, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, when Mr. F.-Glasgow, at a meeting of the committee, protested against a large number of teams this season playing a wing forward, and also leaving the field at .half-time. The committee decided to make known its attitude' to other unions. "In every match I have seen this year I have noticed that wing forwards pure and simple arp being played," Mr. Glasgow said. "I think it time that, though we cannot stop them playing wing forwards, according to rules, we should send circulars to all unions asking them to do their best to see it stopped."

I THE GAME IN WELLINGTON. I

PROMOTION OF TEAMS. As a lesult of the senior Rugby matches played on Saturday' and Monday, which completed the first round in the first and second divisions of the A grade, the following teams in Wellington have been promoted:—St. Patrick's College Old Boys and University, from the second division to the first division, and Petone, Athletic, Wellington and Poneke from the senior B grade to the second division of the A grade. The defeat of University by St. Patrick's College Old Boys in the early game at Athletic Park on Monday left the championship points in the second division as follows:—St. Patrick's College Old Boys 14, University, Johnsonville and Oriental 10 each, Berhampore 5, Miramar 3 and Melrose-Selwyri 'and Onslow" 2 each. In the matter, of points for and against University showed lip much more favourably than the two teams with which they were level in. championship points and consequently they w.ere chosen for promotion'. University have 'so far scored 117 points, with 38 points against, Johnsonville 55 to 42 and Oriental 55 Vto 47. Since the promoted teams cannot carry forward more championship points' than the leading team in tljie division in which they will in future <pl4y, the .points in the senior grade for the' commencement of' the second round are:— I
