FIRST REP. MATCH. The first representative match of the season was played at Kenuiera on Saturday, when the Auckland representatives met the chosen eleven of the Navy and gained a line victory by 0 goals to 2. The ground conditions were soft and slippery, but despite these handicaps an exceptionally fast and interesting game was witnessed. The match can best be decjeribed as an illustration of typical English play against the Dominion's style. The Navy gave a line display of stick work and positional play that was most interesting to watch. The result fairly sums up the merits of the two teams. While the Navy's condition lasted Auckland was well taxed, but in the concluding stages the locals held the ascendancy. AUCKLAND V. NAVY. The teams were :—- Auckland : Wattuiu, Smith, F. Clark, Jones, Robertson, T. Clark, Torbett, Floyd, K. Watts, C. Watts, Wellbourne. Navy : Kerley, Fowler, Backhouse, Courage, Lawrence, Solliek, Armstrong, Edwards, Archdale, Carlill, Kiduton. A miss-hit saw Wellbourne pass inwards, to find Backhouse in the way. A movement in which Robertson, Clark and C. Watts participated was nullitied by Courage, but Auckland were not to be denied. A long pass from the left was flicked into the goal by Floyd. Sellick initiated an attack. hut Archdale was caught offside. Play hung in the Navy territory until Lawrence and Kidston moved forward. An exchange of hits between Sellick and Jones saw Navy away, bu.t Auckland returned, and Floyd netted, but was penalised for offside. Navy gained a footing in Auckland's half, but, sphere was soon returned, and Floyd scored. Auckland 2, Navy 0. From a roll in Watts sent to Wellbourne. who shot accurately, but Kerley was In the way From a free hit, which travelled parallel with the goal, Archdale worked into the circle and shot without result from an acute angle. Fowler held up an attack, but the Auckland forwards persisted and Kerley made a good save from K Watts; the ball cannoned off his pads, then on to the goal post and back into play. A lofty hit relieved the pressure on 'the Navy goal, but it was only temporary. Hard hitting enabled the Navy forwards to make another sortie, and a corner resulted. It was the lirst corner and the spectators wondered what methods would be applied; they were not left long ill doubt. The ball came truly from the line and Archdale, with a kind of flickpush shot, sent the ball through the defence into the middle of the net. Auckland 2, Navy 1. Auckland won the bully, TVellbourne's hit being intercepted by Lawrence, but a smart return by T. Clark put Auckland on the aggressive. A long hit by Backhouse to Armstrong enabled the right wing to advance, the centre being taken by Archdale and blocked by Watts. The Navy still pressed, and a centre from Armstrong v.as well taken by Archdale, who netted a tine goal. Auckland 2, Navy 2. Auckland then returned to the aggressive, and after a full battery of shots had been sent into the goalie Floyd snicked the ball to C. Watts, who found the jiet. Auckland 3, Navy 2. Watts saw the inner forward attacking strongly, Navy seeking relief with a penalty corner. The shot was blocked anrl Navy advanced to Auckland's circle, gaining a penalty corner. Auckland gained relief with a free, but down the left came Wellbourne to be stopped by Fowler, but C. Watts took un the runuing and close play in the circle ended in Backhouse stopping. Archdale and Edward then came up the centre of the field, T. Clark stopping in the circle, but Lawrence intercepted and went through with a pretty run, but slipped in the circle at the critical moment. Auckland got out of a difficult situation and set up a lengthy attack, Archdale eventually clearing the circle. Auckland's forwards again swarmed the circle and E. Watts sent in a hard shot. Auckland 4, Navy 2. From the bully Auckland raced to the circle and Torbett finished the movement with a slick shot. Auckland 5, Navy 2

A. Bennett. (Navy) and H. Watts (Auckland) umpired. SOMERVILLE V. SHORE. North Shore were first away. A crosshit bv Jones enabled the rest of the line to reach the circle. A free lut saw Komerville away, and three attacks were launched on North Shore's goal. A nice bout of passing by the North Shore lorwards gave Hayson a chance, but he skied the ball over the bar. Shore kept Sorntrville on the defensive until Heard initiated an advance. However, short passing saw Shore attacking again, Jones forcing his way into the circle. A long hit cleared Somerville's lines, and they made several onslaughts on the Shore goal, where the defenders conceded several corners. Shore took a turn on the attack, and a little later Cox bolted and Shore reached foreign territory. A free hit just outside the circle gave Anthony a chance. Delahunty stopped well but Jones following in smartly made no mistake. North Shore 1, Somerville 0. Somerville retaliated, E. Watts and Weilbourne heading several attacks, but they met with strong opposition frotn Carter. Varying the attack Somerville operated on the right flank, but Savage cleared and Jones accepting a pass from Vauglian streaked for the circle. Delahunty came out and blocked further progress, and Smith hit out near the halfway flag. One of Somerville's characteristic dashes gave Glauville a fine opportunity, but direction was bad. A moment later a hot shot from E. Watts caniioncd against Vail's pads and Somerville were thwarted again. However, they were not to be denied, and E. Watts breaking away Vail stopped progress with a little kick, but Hedges was handy. Somerville 1, North Shore 1. When the game restarted Somerville took the offensive and after a corner shot had been stopped C. Watts converted. Somerville 2, North Shore 1. E. Watts opened the next attack, but Glanville made a poor attempt. North Shore had brief breathing space, for the Somerville centre was again goal-hunting and sent in a good shot while falling. The next movement saw a blind shot by Hedges miss the uprights. North Shore took a turn on the attack, but Parker came to the rescue. Then Smith left no doubt in shifting the scene of operations, which 13. Watts almost turned to account after a brilliant run. Bull and Cox repelled the boarders. A nice piece of passing between the two Watts, terminated in E. Watts beating the Shore backs and scoring. Somerville 4 North Shore 1 Messrs. C. Preston and A. Williams umpired.
