MEMORIAL PLAQUE.

TRADITIONS OF A.M.R

COMPETITIONS AMONG REGIMENTS

Special interest is attached to the annual reunion of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, which will take place in Lewis Eady's Hall this evening, for a memorial plaque is to be handed over for competition among its three units. At previous reunions suggestions have been made that some interest should be taken in the fortunes of the territorial regiments, the 3rd, 4th and 11th, from which the A.M.R. sprang, and an endeavour made to encourage the present lads to keep alive the traditions of the old regiments. The matter was given due consideration, and the plaque, designed by Mr. Harry Wade, is the outcome. *Of beautifully polished mottled kauri, the plaque, or shield, which measures 33in by 18in, is embellished with figured puriri mouldingsand carved puriri swag drops and mouldings. Possession among the three regiments will be decided on general efficiency, and 30 silver plates spaced over the front provide for the winning regiment's name to be engraved over as many years. In a central panel immediately above these plates appear these words in silver enamel. "The holders of this plaque are j Iry virtue of their patriotic service and ! their soldierly efficiency right worthy ' custodians of the proud traditions of this I regiment. To this their predecessors (who served in the field give grateful I acknowledgment." Immediately above this central panel feature appear the emblems of the three regiments affixed to bronze medallions. Above this again, and in the centre of a carved wreath, appear the words in bronze and silver, "Auckland Mounted Rifles," with the words "On 'Active Service" within. In a margin between the outer mould and the centre panel are affixed the Battle Honours of the Regiment—lo in all—in bronze and silver enamel, dating back to the Boer War. At tlie bottom are two bronze and silver enamel medallions, ' ] 899-1019, on either side of a mounted man fully equipped and modelled in solid silver. ! Tlie plaque is the combined work of Mr; Fletcher Wallace and Mr. Beubeii Watts. ' The presentation will be made by Colonel J. M". McCarroll, who will preside, and it will bo accepted on behalf of the regiments by Colonel M.E.Aklred, Brigadier of the Mounted Rifle Brigade.
