CLOSE CROSS-EXAMINATION.
DETECTIVE EXPLAINS IN DETAIL.
DOUBLE MURDER TRIAL CONTINUES.
Close cross-examination of Detective T. W. Allsopp by Mr. E. H. Northcroft, senior counsel for the defence, was the feature to-day at the trial of William Alfred Bayly, the Ruawaro farmer, aged 28, who is charged with the murders of his neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pender Lakey. The detective was asked to explain in minute detail where particular exhibits of burnt bone and other articles were found, and he marked the various spots in red ink on an aerial photograph. The condition of the tea table at Lakey's house the day Detective Allsopp arrived, the position of the sledge marks on Bayly's farm near the boundary fence, and the discussion which took place between the detective and Bayly the day the guns were found on Bayly's were all referred to at length by defence counsel. To-day is the ninth day of the trial. Just before the luncheon adjournment, after Detective Allsopp had been in the box for over 1 3 hours, Mr. Northcroft completed his cross-examination.
