THE FIRST SMITHS.
An official of the Society of Genealogists has traced the Smith family history back to the days of armoured knights. "In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries," he eays, "anyone whose trade was the beating of metal in any form was a smith. Armourers, the men who made coats of mail, shoesmiths, gold and silversmiths, all took Smith as their surnames. In those days the smithing trades were in the majority. So to-day Smith is, and will bo for many hundred years, quite the most common name."
